Cultivating Health Center Growth

 

The current health care environment presents health centers and PCAs with  exciting opportunities.  Healthcare reform, funding increases , advances in HIT, integration of behavioral / primary care , and the patient- centered medical home have the potential to dramatically increase the quality of, and access to care .    Implementing these initiatives while managing the daily operations of health centers and PCAs can seem daunting .   Change of this order can be disturbing for people; producing resistance and possibly a division between staff and management.  Innovative initiatives such as these frequently fall short of their potential because they are often seen by staff as more work, imposed by management, in an already too-busy schedule…

Therefore any effort to expand an organization's ability to excel must focus on personal growth for each individual.  In an organization with a personal growth culture, the energizing force that motivates people to perform well and launch new initiatives is their personal commitment to an inspiring purpose.  When people are present to such inspiration they are willing to make stretch promises outside their comfort zone and seek to develop new skills and behaviors that are outside their comfort zone.  Creating this type of culture for staff is the job of leadership. When staff are present to their own inspiring purpose and have the tools to fulfill on it, they will initiate new projects; fomenting growth and change throughout the organization.
